About Gillian

Gillian is the General Counsel and Company Secretary of Cancer Research Horizons. She is also a Director in Cancer Research UK’s Research & Innovation Directorate, providing counsel to Cancer Research UK research. She has over 25 years experience as a lawyer, working in corporate finance and helping companies with their growth, development and strategy. Prior to joining Cancer Research UK, Gillian was a partner in Herbert Smith Freehills’ corporate team and was cited in Chambers as a Leading Practitioner for corporate and M&A, high-end capability, as well as being awarded Client Partner of the Year at the British Legal Awards of 2016. She is a trustee on the Investment Committee of the National Trust for Scotland and an experienced FTSE public company non-executive director, serving on the board of Lonmin plc, the South African mining company, where she was a member of their Remuneration, Nomination, Social, Ethics and Transformation Committees. Throughout here career, Gillian has worked as an investment professional in impact investing, leading capital raisings and advisory mandates for impactful corporates and funds. As well as being a qualified lawyer, she has a degree in Russian from Edinburgh University.
