The Cancer Research UK Innovation Summit

Cancer Research UK’s first Innovation Summit took place on Monday 19 November 2018 to inspire academic entrepreneurialism in oncology.

  • 26 November 2018

The event was a huge success with over 200 in attendance and a host of renowned speakers. Both academics and commercialisation specialists were brought together in panel sessions, workshops and networking events to exchange expertise and insight.

The day explored a range of engaging topics through panel sessions and keynote addresses, focusing on the many different routes for translation of basic science, how to run a start-up, and first hand experiences from a range of speakers including Professor Steve Jackson, Professor John Lyon, and many others.

“Bringing together seasoned entrepreneurial teams, meaningful science, intelligent investment and an accessible market is a recipe for success. Cancer Research UK’s Innovation summit commenced this process and many engaged in the pursuit.” John Lyon

In addition to panel sessions and speakers, there were a range of workshops covering three critical areas for translation; therapeutic development, digital approaches to oncology and the commercial opportunities in diagnostics and Imaging.  Multiple Q&As throughout the day enabled interactive discussions and perspective, adding real value to the conversations held.

“The Cancer Research UK Innovation Summit was a huge success in bringing together both seasoned and aspiring entrepreneurs with representatives from diverse academic and commercial funding organisations. I very much enjoyed the event and hope that other such events take place in the future." Steve Jackson

The day concluded with Chief Business officer Tony Hickson announcing the first in a series of Innovation Prizes, which will be launched on 3rd December, with the aim to inspire and support the next generation of scientists with the drive to take their basic discoveries to patients.
